Here are some suggestions of New Year’s Resolutions for employers.

1)   Focus on the uniqueness of your employees. Try to spend some time each day or week focusing on a single employee. Think about their strengths and what makes them valuable to the company, are they being fully utilized? Consider if they seem content with their work, are there changes you can make to improve their work life? The goal of this exercise should be equal parts increasing productivity of the employee and increasing their happiness. Though everyone has weaknesses, try and keep this exercise positive. This isn’t a formal review, it should be more casual and private. Your employees are all different and by treating them all the same you could be missing opportunities to maximize their potential.

2)   Keep current on employment law. The laws affecting employers is constantly changing and have great influence on your business. You don’t need to be a lawyer to read employer blogs and news sites to stay current. And no one expects you to know everything about employment law. But attempting to stay current can give you the knowledge to ask the right questions to the experts. Just having an idea of what is changing in the employment law world can give you a heads up when you’re faced with issues.

3)   Create a yearlong, big picture to do list for the company. Though you probably do annual budgets and planning for your company this is slightly different. This is more of a vision and annual goals of your company. Also important you should try and not make this goal financially oriented. Your budgets should set out many financial goals. This should be things like “organize non-work related socials”, “increase team morale”. Consider writing this as a group and take all members ideas seriously. This can be fun and bring an aspect of play into the team. Working together is much easier when you enjoy your coworkers. And when your employees are happy you will increase your retention rates.

This new year take some time to look to the future and make a strong resolution for your company. Take this seriously, print it out and frame it on the wall where you will see it every day. A year is 365 days long, and if you don’t have that constant reminder it is very easy to forget what your resolution was.
